Empowering Unity: Unforgettable NEHUSU and NEHUTA Journey to MeTTA-NU Chakpaa
The Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA-NEHU) and North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) have expressed concern over the appointment practices within the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), specifically regarding the roles of Registrar and Deputy Registrar. The controversy arises from the removal of Omkar Singh, a retired Colonel, from his post as Registrar, and the subsequent handling of the Deputy Registrar’s position.
MeTTA-NEHU emphasizes the importance of following due administrative procedures and protocols for such appointments. The association insists that any deviation from standard practices could compromise the university’s integrity. The appointment of Amit Gupta has been highlighted as particularly contentious, with MeTTA-NEHU signaling dissatisfaction over Gupta’s selection for the Deputy Registrar post.
Further discontent has emerged concerning recruitment practices for the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) at NEHU. The association alleges that the selection process for qualified candidates to contractual positions within the program has not been conducted transparently or fairly. They stress that appointments should be based strictly on merit and follow rigorous selection criteria to ensure that only the most competent candidates are chosen.
In a bid to address these issues, MeTTA-NEHU, alongside NEHUSU and the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), has called for dialogue with university authorities to rectify these concerns. The groups advocate for greater transparency and accountability in the university’s administrative affairs.
This ongoing dispute reflects broader concerns over governance and transparency in educational institutions, highlighting the need for consistent adherence to ethical standards in administrative processes. As stakeholders continue to push for reforms, the resolution of these issues remains crucial to maintaining the university’s credibility and commitment to excellence.
