The Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) marked its 60th anniversary on October 29 with a grand celebration held at the NLA Secretariat in Kohima. Under the theme “Embracing Innovation and Celebrating Legacy,” the event highlighted Nagaland’s democratic progress, drawing together dignitaries, legislators, and citizens. Governor La Ganesan emphasized the Assembly as a bastion of democracy and a symbol of unity and urged for transparency and innovation in governance. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio highlighted the Assembly’s ongoing role in addressing the Naga political issue, central to Nagaland’s identity. He reflected on its engagement in peace processes and the continuous pursuit of integration for Naga-inhabited areas, embodying the will of the people.
Former Chief Minister Dr. S.C. Jamir called for a realistic approach to current challenges, advocating a commitment to the Constitution and integrity. The event showcased the Assembly’s history through a video presentation and honored past leaders who contributed to Nagaland’s legislative development. The NLA celebrated its pioneers, presenting them with laptops and inaugurating newly named facilities to honor past influential figures, including a botanical garden named after TN Angami, the first NLA Speaker. Celebrations included performances by the Nagaland Chamber Choir and topped with the release of a commemorative 60th anniversary Souvenir and a valedictory address by Minister K.G. Kenye, emphasizing the NLA’s impact. The event was conducted under the chairmanship of NLA Deputy Speaker S. Toiho Yeptho.
