Mumbai, Oct 29: Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, during the ‘CII Spain India Business Summit’ in Mumbai, emphasized Spain’s capability as a global leader in clean energy, offering to aid India in achieving its ambitious target of 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030. He highlighted the vast potential for stronger ties between India and the European Union, and announced that Spain has invested $4.2 billion in India since the turn of the century. His remarks underscored Spain’s commitment to strengthening energy security and accelerating India’s green transition through a fusion of Spanish innovation and Indian potential.
Sanchez also pointed to Spain’s advanced railway systems and transport solutions, which can significantly contribute to India’s infrastructure projects. A recent Memorandum of Understanding between the two nations promises to enhance collaboration in railway development. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari reiterated India’s intent to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070, applauding the collaboration to further green energy and mobility priorities.
Highlighting the strategic importance of Spain’s visit, the first by a Spanish President to India in 18 years, Sanchez expressed eagerness to advance EU-India free trade negotiations, aiming to expand market diversity and size. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General of CII, praised Spain’s substantial experience in high-speed rail, urban infrastructure, and smart mobility. He expressed optimism for new partnerships, especially in renewable energy, artificial intelligence, defense, and green technologies.
The discussions suggested a promising outlook for joint ventures, poised to reduce costs and boost global market competitiveness. The collaboration aims to enhance strategic autonomy and capabilities in both nations, with India focusing on cleaner energy through increased use of wind and solar power, leveraging Spain’s expertise in these areas to bolster its energy transition.
