Exciting Progress: Track-Laying Underway at Metro Rail Phase II’s Madhavaram Depot
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is advancing its Phase II Project with the commencement of track-laying at the Madhavaram Depot, the largest facility in this development phase. This crucial site will serve as an interchange linking corridors 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT) and 5 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur), and construction has been ongoing for several months. Unlike the future ballasted tracks of the Poonamallee Depot, the Madhavaram Depot will feature ballast-less tracks. So far, 2 km of tracks have been laid, with completion targeted for December 2025. Once finished, the depot will include 24 tracks comprising stabling lines, inspection bays, repair lines, and a test track. This depot will be pivotal for the operation and maintenance of trains servicing corridors 3 and 5. Meanwhile, Poonamallee Depot will support corridor 4, and plans are underway for a mini-depot near Sholinganallur. The Madhavaram project signifies a key step in the expansion of Chennai’s metro network, promising enhanced connectivity upon its completion.
