Shocking E. Coli Outbreak: KFC & Pizza Hut Halt Onion Use After McDonald’s Tragedy – What You Need to Know
A recent E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers has resulted in at least 75 confirmed illnesses across 13 U.S. states, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifying 22 hospitalizations and one death in Colorado. Two individuals developed serious kidney complications, a known risk of E. coli infections. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet pinpointed the exact source of contamination, but preliminary evidence suggests uncooked slivered onions used as toppings on the burgers may be responsible. The onions were supplied by Taylor Farms from their Colorado Springs facility. In response, McDonald’s has indefinitely halted sourcing onions from this location and removed the Quarter Pounder from menus in approximately 900 outlets across several states in the Midwest and Mountain regions.
Taylor Farms, meanwhile, has recalled yellow onions distributed from the Colorado facility and is collaborating with the CDC and FDA investigations. The company expressed regret over the outbreak’s impact on affected individuals and families. While Taylor Farms did not publicly announce the recall in line with FDA protocol, it has been proactively informing its customers. Other fast-food chains like Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC, and Burger King have also taken precautionary measures by removing onions from select outlets.
The outbreak’s E. coli strain is known for producing toxins that can lead to severe symptoms, including fever, vomiting, and dehydration, posing significant risks to young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Despite the growing number of cases, McDonald’s has not extended the removal of the Quarter Pounder from additional restaurants. The CDC has noted that some affected individuals had recently traveled, with at least three dining at McDonald’s during their trips. Colorado accounts for the highest number of cases at 26, followed by scattered reports from Montana, Nebraska, and other states.
