EAM Jaishankar Urges Canada for Responsible Diplomacy: A Call for Unity Amid Rising Nijjar Case Tensions
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has sharply criticized the Canadian government’s handling of Indian diplomats amid escalating diplomatic tensions following allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani supporter Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Speaking in Pune, Jaishankar called for a “more sensible, more sober, more responsible” political stance from Canada, stressing the deterioration in bilateral relations.
The comments follow a heightened diplomatic crisis after Canada named Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, as subjects in the Nijjar murder investigation. In response, India recalled Verma and expelled six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi, signaling a significant diplomatic rift.
Jaishankar expressed frustration over Canada’s approach, highlighting that India’s past concerns about organized crime in Canada were overlooked. “We completely reject the manner in which the Canadian government targeted our High Commissioner and diplomats,” he stated, underscoring India’s dedication to its national integrity and sovereignty.
He also critiqued the Canadian political climate, suggesting a small minority has outsized influence, misrepresenting the broader Indian community in Canada. “This minority has made itself appear as a larger political voice, which not only harms our relationship but is detrimental to Canada itself,” Jaishankar remarked.
Amidst these rising tensions, Jaishankar dismissed rumors of potential Canadian sanctions against India as unfounded and damaging, emphasizing the baseless nature of such allegations which risk diplomatic ties.
Additionally, Jaishankar underlined India’s burgeoning global diplomatic influence, particularly during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, highlighting India’s unique ability to engage with both Moscow and Kyiv. He also noted India’s achievements on the international stage, including the African Union’s inclusion as a G20 member under India’s leadership, marking a significant milestone.
The ongoing diplomatic clash with Canada presents a critical moment in India-Canada relations, demanding careful navigation to preserve longstanding ties.
