In a decisive counter-insurgency operation, two overground workers (OGWs) and a linkman associated with the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) were apprehended on Friday in Upper Assam. The arrests took place in a collaborative effort involving Military Intelligence and Assam Police, targeting separate locations across Dibrugarh and Charaideo districts.
The apprehended individuals have been identified as Ujjal Gohain and Shashanka Rajkhowa, both OGWs, and Prem Newar, the linkman. The operation was the result of meticulous intelligence-gathering which revealed their active communication with senior ULFA-I commanders, SS Brig Arunodoy Dahotia and SS Brig Ganesh Lahon, using the encrypted messaging platform WhatsApp.
This crucial intelligence was shared with the Inspector General of Police for the Northeast Region, prompting the swift execution of the operations that led to their arrests. The successful operation arrives just ten days after security forces apprehended four other individuals linked to a forestalled abduction attempt of a senior Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) employee orchestrated by ULFA-I in Sivasagar.
During a press conference on October 16, Sivasagar Superintendent of Police Subhrajyoti Bora disclosed that the suspects had been plotting the abduction alongside a group of ULFA-I cadres for several months, underscoring the persistent threat posed by the banned outfit.
Security agencies have emphasized the importance of these operations in dismantling insurgent networks and ensuring stability in Assam.
