Remarkable Discovery: New Begonia Species Unearthed in Arunachal’s Pristine Dibang Valley
In a significant botanical breakthrough, researchers have uncovered a new flowering plant species, Begonia neisti, in Arunachal Pradesh’s remote Dibang Valley. This discovery underscores the rich, yet underexplored biodiversity of the region, hinting at the potential for more unique plant life waiting to be found.
Dr. Nazir Ahmad Bhat from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya, in concert with Bipankar Hajong and Dr. Pankaj Bharali from the CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, led the discovery of this distinctive Begonia species. Notably, Begonia neisti features variegated leaves adorned with white-silver circular spots and dark brownish-red patches at vein junctions. Its large, striking leaves are complemented by a prominent white stripe on its stems and petioles, setting it apart from other species within the Begonia genus.
The plant flourishes on the moist and hilly roadside slopes between Hunli and Anini, bringing a vibrant burst of color to the landscape as it blooms between November and January. The species’ distinctiveness was confirmed through advanced molecular phylogenetic analysis using the ITS2 marker, revealing a close evolutionary relationship with other Begonia species on the Indian subcontinent. The findings are meticulously detailed in the Nordic Journal of Botany.
However, Begonia neisti faces a precarious future. Classified as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List due to limited data, its habitat is under threat from aggressive road expansion projects. This situation has sparked calls from experts for urgent conservation efforts to protect the species from possible extinction, ensuring its scientific and environmental contributions are not lost.
