Delhi High Court Halts Elephant Ranjitha’s Transfer from Assam to Delhi Temple
Guwahati: The Delhi High Court has temporarily halted the relocation of Ranjitha, a 48-year-old female elephant, from Jorhat, Assam, to a temple in Delhi due to insufficient clarity regarding the necessity and purpose of the move. The notice was issued to the Maa Baglamukhi Mandir Trust by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedeala, ensuring Ranjitha remains at her current home.
The Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) contested the transfer, emphasizing the risks to Ranjitha’s health and overall well-being. The court expressed concerns about the elephant enduring a strenuous 2,000-kilometer journey, especially considering her advanced age and the stark contrast in climate and living conditions between Jorhat and Delhi.
Additionally, the chief wildlife warden of Delhi has been asked to evaluate the temple’s environment, including the adequacy of staff and other animals present, to ensure it is suitable for Ranjitha. FIAPO’s counsel argued that the shift could be traumatic for the elephant, given the natural, expansive habitat she enjoys in Jorhat compared to the more restrictive space available in the urban setting of Delhi.
The court is scheduled to revisit this case for further hearings on November 28, leaving Ranjitha’s future in legal balance until then.
This decision highlights critical issues around animal welfare in relocation scenarios and reflects broader concerns about how such moves impact the lives of elderly animals.
