Terrifying Cyclone Dana Strikes! Odisha & Bengal Brace for Impact: 10 Crucial Facts Unveiled
As Cyclone ‘Dana’ approaches landfall in Kolkata, police officials in Hooghly and administration across southern West Bengal have intensified preparations for the severe weather event expected to hit later Thursday into Friday. Heavy rains and strong winds have already begun impacting the region, prompting the evacuation of more than 243,000 people to safety in anticipation of the cyclone’s impact. The storm, which is currently positioned 150 km southeast of Paradip, Odisha, and 250 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal, is predicted to bring “heavy to very heavy rainfall” and winds reaching 110 to 120 kmph, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has spearheaded evacuation efforts, designating over 356,000 people for relocation from vulnerable low-lying areas and stating her intent to remain vigilant at the state secretariat to monitor developments. The cyclone is anticipated to lead to the cancellation of over 170 express and passenger trains by the South Eastern Railway, affecting routes in West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand. Additionally, Eastern Railway has suspended 68 suburban trains in the Howrah division, and all EMU local trains from Sealdah station have been halted from Thursday evening to Friday morning.
Operations at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport are temporarily suspended from Thursday evening to Friday morning, preparing for potential high winds and torrential rain. Kolkata Port has also paused ship movements as a precautionary measure. Thirteen battalions of the state’s disaster management force and 14 battalions from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to shore up preparedness in the coastal areas, while the Indian Coast Guard is on alert with vessels and aircraft ready to respond to emergencies at sea. Fishermen have been urged to avoid venturing into the sea due to dangerous conditions.
