Assam Congress in Turmoil: Shocking Resignation of Leader Borah Over Behali Candidate Dispute | Guwahati News
The Congress-led opposition alliance in Assam is teetering on the brink of collapse following the resignation of Bhupen Kumar Borah, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). His departure stems from disagreements over selecting a consensus candidate for the Behali assembly constituency ahead of upcoming bypolls. A five-member committee, formed during a meeting of opposition parties, suggested the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPI-ML) field a candidate in Behali. However, Jitendra Singh, the AICC general secretary responsible for Assam, has yet to approve the recommendation. Borah, unable to persuade the committee to revise this stance, stepped down as president, citing pressure to finalize a decision.
Congress Leader Debabrata Saikia remarked on internal discord possibly leading to Borah’s resignation and stated that Congress is likely to nominate its own candidate for Behali. Meanwhile, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of Assam Jatiya Parishad, urged Congress to act swiftly and respect the committee’s recommendation to maintain opposition unity against the BJP in the 2026 assembly elections. He emphasized that collective action is essential to restoring secular democracy and preventing division among opposition forces. The seat allocation dispute over Behali illustrates potential fractures within the opposition, which could influence alliances and strategies in future elections.
