Desperate Navalur Residents Demand Immediate Action Against Hazardous Sewage Dumping
For over six months, residents of Navalur have been grappling with a persistent, foul odor every morning, caused by sewage tankers illegally dumping waste onto open plots in the Gandhi Nagar layout during the night. Initial action by local police resulted in one truck being fined, offering a brief respite. However, this illicit activity has resumed, sometimes occurring in broad daylight when fewer people are around, according to Atish Baisantry, vice-president of the OMR Gandhi Nagar Plot Owners Welfare Association.
The community suspects foul play, as their surveillance cameras and lights are frequently vandalized, although no definitive proof links these acts to the truck operators. Residents are increasingly concerned about potential groundwater contamination affecting the over 2,000 plots and numerous residential communities in the vicinity. Krishnan Subramanian, the association’s president, emphasized that the lack of a sewage pumping station outside the Greater Chennai Corporation limits has led to the illegal dumping in their area. The association has submitted appeals to various governmental departments, urging them to halt the discharge of untreated sewage and advocating for the construction of a dedicated sewage pumping facility.
