Revitalizing Ngopok: The Inspiring Green Revolution of 700 Ketir Momir Saplings in Arunachal
In a commendable effort to enhance environmental sustainability, the villagers of Ngopok in Arunachal Pradesh undertook a massive tree plantation drive on October 21. Spearheaded by Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) leaders, Gaon Burahs (GBs), retired government personnel, and the Apum brothers, the community collectively planted 700 saplings of Ketir Momir, a local tree species known for its ample shade and bird-friendly fruits.
This initiative aims to beautify the village roads with greenery while tackling global warming. The plantation was dedicated to Geyon Apum, the first teacher of the Government Upper Primary School in Ngopok village, who is over 90 years old. The saplings were generously donated by Apum’s sons, with strong support from local PRI members and villagers.
The event was graced by Olen Rome, Zila Parishad Chairperson of East Siang District, who praised the endeavor and encouraged residents to continue planting trees to mitigate the effects of climate change. Also present was the guest of honor, Dr. Dangi Perme, a local leader, who pledged to adopt and care for five of the planted saplings. Dr. Perme highlighted the impact of deforestation on global warming in the region.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Sibo Passing boosted the villagers’ efforts by donating Rs 10,000 for the care of the saplings. He assured the PRI team of his continued support and promised to revisit the saplings even after his potential transfer from the Mebo Sub-Division.
The event was attended by various government officials, including the Range Forest Officer of Mebo, the Assistant Engineer of the Water Resources Department, and the Head Teacher of the local school. Retired principals Biyon Yirang and Ganpang Megu applauded the initiative and the Apum brothers, Maktil and Maklung, for their contribution to this laudable environmental cause.
