Urgent Outcry: AJYCP Exposes Corruption Delaying Critical NH-37 Four-Laning Project
Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a protest on Monday, forming a human chain along NH-37 in the Kakojan area of Jorhat district. This demonstration aimed to highlight the slow progress of the four-laning work on the critical Jorhat-Jhanji stretch, a project that began on May 23, 2015, and has seen only 40% completion over nine years. AJYCP President Palash Changmai led the protest, expressing concerns about the prolonged delay.
The protesters carried placards calling for an investigation into the alleged corruption within the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Changmai accused NHIDCL of allocating contracts to companies blacklisted in regions outside Assam, suggesting possible collusion with these firms for substantial commissions.
In related highway project news, Kerala’s PWD minister, Mohamed Riyas, noted delays in the Kollam-Sengottai highway project due to compensation issues, and the ongoing resistance from local fishermen has stalled a coastal highway project in Thiruvananthapuram. Additionally, locals in Moolampilly continue to protest the slow development of a vital approach road, highlighting ongoing infrastructure challenges in the region.
These situations underscore a broader pattern of delays and community resistance impacting highway projects, drawing attention to the need for transparency and accountability in public infrastructure development.
