Shocking Rs 2,300-Cr Road Project Scam Unveiled: Police Launch Investigation
Multi-Crore Road Scam Under Investigation in Meghalaya
SHILLONG, Oct 21: The Meghalaya government has initiated a police investigation into a significant scam involving state engineers and contractors linked to a road construction project. Nine individuals, including senior engineers from the state government and officials from two private companies located in Telangana and Haryana, have been named in a First Information Report (FIR) submitted by the authorities.
The Public Works Department (PWD) announced the FIR filing following the revelation of substantial discrepancies in the road project, which has escalated to over Rs 2,300 crore. The project, aimed at constructing a road linking Shillong with Tura via Nongstoin and Rongjeng, was approved in 2010 as part of the Central Government’s Special Road Development Programme-North East. However, the initial contract worth Rs 1,303.83 crore was repeatedly revised and ultimately surged to Rs 2,366.77 crore, far exceeding the original budget.
The alleged misconduct involves key figures, including the then PWD chief engineer, executive engineer, and officials from the involved private companies. According to the FIR lodged by PWD (NH) Chief Engineer AM Kharmawphlang, the fraudulent activities were highlighted during ongoing arbitration proceedings led by the Arbitral Tribunal after the state’s failure to meet revised contractual demands presented by the contractors.
The FIR accuses the implicated officials and contractors of collusion, fraud, records fabrication, and corrupt practices, collectively causing a substantial financial burden on the public exchequer. The document emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive, systematic police investigation to uncover the extent of the conspiracy and malpractice.
Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang confirmed the registration of the FIR and the active status of the investigation as of Monday. The authorities aim to bring clarity and accountability to this high-profile case, ensuring that any misuse of funds is addressed and rectified. (PTI)
