Empower Nagaland: Prevent Iodine Deficiency Disorder and Secure a Healthier Future!
Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day was observed at Charity School, Kohima on October 21, under the theme “A daily dose of Iodine keeps you fit and fine.” Dr. Mereninla Senlem, Additional Director and SPO (NHM) at the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, emphasized the significance of iodine intake for both present and future generations through iodised salt to avoid severe iodine deficiency disorders. She highlighted iodine sources including sea, plants, soil, and dairy products, pointing out that sea products are the richest in iodine. She noted that iodised salt is essential for everyone, regardless of social or racial background, to prevent disorders such as stillbirth, birth defects, miscarriages, stunted growth, intellectual disabilities, and developmental delays. Goiter remains the most common indicator of iodine deficiency.
Dr. John Kemp, State Program Officer (NIDDCP), highlighted the role of youth as ambassadors for promoting iodised salt usage. NIDDCP Technical Officer Nungsang Longchar pointed out that Nagaland is geographically prone to severe iodine deficiency, being part of the sub-Himalayan belt. However, recent surveys reveal a significant drop in goiter prevalence from 34.3% in the 1960s to approximately 1%, a positive sign of progress. He stated that iodine deficiency is the world’s most common cause of preventable mental retardation and brain damage.
The event also included various engaging activities, such as a quiz competition on iodine deficiency disorders where participants received prizes for correct answers. A demonstration of iodine testing was conducted, with test kits distributed to attendees to promote awareness and education. The program concluded with a vote of thanks from Vincent Belho, General Manager of partner organization FPAI. The initiative aims to spread awareness and educate the community about the importance of iodine in daily diets for overall health and well-being.
