Heartfelt Triumph: Deepika Kumari Clinches Fifth World Cup Final Silver as India Celebrates Sole Medal Achievement
India’s top recurve archer, Deepika Kumari, claimed her fifth silver medal at the Archery World Cup Final, falling to China’s Li Jiaman 0-6 in the decisive match. Returning to competitive action after a three-year break to start her family, the third-seeded Deepika demonstrated impressive form. She cruised to the final with commanding victories, including a 6-0 win over China’s Yang Xiaolei in the quarterfinals and a close 6-4 semifinal triumph against Alejandra Valencia of Mexico. Valencia had previously defeated Deepika for a bronze earlier this year.
In the final showdown, Deepika faced fourth-seeded Li Jiaman, a Paris Olympics team silver medalist. Despite her strong entry, Deepika struggled to match Li’s intensity. The Chinese archer narrowly took the first set 27-26 and then shot a perfect 30 in the second set, putting Deepika on the back foot. A critical misstep came in the third set when Deepika’s second arrow landed in the 7-ring, sealing her defeat as Li won the set 27-25 and clinched the gold.
This event marked Deepika’s ninth appearance at the esteemed World Cup Final, stacking another silver to her accolades alongside a previous bronze. However, Dola Banerjee remains India’s sole World Cup Final gold medalist, a title she earned in 2007.
The Indian team’s male counterpart, Dhiraj Bommadevara, succumbed early despite an initial lead against South Korea’s Lee Woo Seok in the opening round. Dhiraj was ahead 4-2 but faltered, losing 4-6 to the Paris Olympics bronze medallist.
India’s contingent ended the World Cup Final with Deepika’s silver as the sole medal. In the compound category, Prathamesh Fuge finished fourth, while Priyansh and Jyothi Surekha Vennam struggled to reach the medal rounds. The performances underscored the persistent challenge Indian archers face under pressure on the global stage.
