Exciting Showdown Unfolds: DK Local Authorities’ Constituency Byelection to Legislative Council Heats Up!
The Mangaluru City Corporation saw council members casting their votes at a polling booth for the Dakshina Kannada Local Authorities’ Constituency bypoll on October 21, 2024. This byelection, also covering Udupi district, fills the seat vacated by Kota Srinivas Poojary, now a Lok Sabha MP for Udupi-Chikkamagaluru. Voting began at 8 a.m. across 392 booths, with 6,032 eligible voters comprising local body members, legislators, and MPs. Four candidates are competing: Kishore B.R. (BJP), Raju Poojary (Congress), Anwar Sadath S. (SDPI), and Independent Dinakar Ullal.
Notable figures like Dakshina Kannada MP Brijesh Chowta and Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharat Shetty cast their votes. Udupi district saw participation from Kaup MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, and Udupi City Municipal Council president Prabhakara Poojary. The Speaker and Mangaluru MLA U.T. Khader voted in Ullal City Municipality. A unique highlight was Sharat, a Kokkada Gram Panchayat member, voting in his bridegroom attire on his wedding day.
The byelection addresses the vacancy created by Poojary’s June resignation, whose council term would have lasted until January 2028. Previous elections in December 2021 saw Poojary and Congress’s Manjunath Bhandary elected in this dual-member constituency. Results are to be declared on October 24 at St. Aloysius Pre-University College in Mangaluru.
