The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its first list of 99 candidates for the forthcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. High-profile candidates include Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who will defend his Nagpur South West seat, and Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who will run from Kamthi. Shrijaya Chavan, daughter of Ashok Chavan, is nominated from Bhokar.
Other notable candidates feature Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar (Vandre West), Nitesh Rane, son of Lok Sabha MP Narayan Rane (Kankavli), along with senior leaders such as Girish Mahajan (Jamner), Sudhir Mungantiwar (Ballarpur), Mangal Prabhat Lodha (Malabar Hill), Rahul Narwekar (Colaba), and Chhatrapati Shivendra Raje Bhosale (Satara).
Maharashtra will go to the polls on November 20, with results scheduled for release on November 23. The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has yet to finalize its seat-sharing agreement. The BJP aims to contest approximately 150 seats, although negotiations with allies remain challenging.
Reflecting on past performance, the BJP secured 105 seats in the 2019 elections and 122 in 2014. Comparatively, its allies captured fewer seats, with Shiv Sena winning 56 in 2019 and 63 in 2014, and Congress securing 44 and 42 seats, respectively. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti bagged 17 of Maharashtra’s 48 seats, while the Congress-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) secured 30.
This announcement comes amidst ongoing discussions and strategic positioning in Maharashtra’s complex political landscape, with significant implications for the upcoming elections.
