Thrilling Kickoff: Unleash the Excitement at the Fifth Edition of the Brahmaputra Volleyball League!
Mikirbheta, Morigaon – Oct 20: Mikirbheta Revenue Town in Morigaon district recently buzzed with activity as residents, led by Hiranya Deka, prepared for the grand opening of the fifth Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL). The event, described by Hiranya as a “noble cause,” saw the community unite to host an inaugural function and a communal meal for visiting guests from across Assam. The BVL, featuring Under-12 and Under-16 players, is part of The Assam Volleyball Mission 100, initiated by former Indian volleyball captain Abhijit Bhattacharya.
Abhijit’s vision, which started with providing 100 volleyballs to village teams, has exploded into a major community movement, transforming from 400 players to 400 teams in five years. The league’s grassroots model has drawn international interest, with the International Volleyball Federation seeking to learn from its success. Remarkably, 90% of current Assam volleyball players come from the BVL, and participation among girls has surged, bringing balance to the Under-16 category.
Despite India’s global rank of 74th in volleyball, Abhijit, now working in ONGC’s HR Department, remains committed to the league’s role in sports and community development. Supported by individual sponsorships of Rs 15,000 per team, the BVL promotes village-hosted matches in a decentralized fashion. The league’s scale ensures a vibrant competition, featuring approximately 900 matches beginning in November.
The high-profile inauguration drew local officials, former players, and community members, with former Indian captain Ratish Nair applauding the unique grassroots league. The BVL is not just reshaping volleyball in Assam but also fostering a sense of community, proving that local efforts can generate national pride and development through sports.
