Tragic Loss: Supreme Court to Hear Crucial Case on Deaths of 3 Civil Service Aspirants at Delhi Coaching Centre on October 21
On July 27, 2024, a tragedy unfolded at Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi, when three civil services aspirants—Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nevin Delvin—drowned in a flooded basement library following heavy rain. The Delhi High Court has since granted interim bail to four co-owners of the building until January 30.
The Supreme Court is set to hear the case on October 21, 2024. Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will consider findings from a Union government-appointed committee tasked with investigating the incident and recommending measures to prevent similar occurrences. The apex court has called for policy and legislative updates from the governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi to ensure such incidents do not recur in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Attorney General R. Venkataramani stated that a high-level committee has been formed to assess both legislative and administrative interventions, while the Supreme Court aims to address this issue on a wider canvas, seeking national-level solutions.
Previously, on August 5, the Supreme Court described coaching centers as “death chambers” and raised concerns about their safety standards. This followed a December 2023 Delhi High Court directive for fire safety compliance checks in all Delhi coaching centers. The investigation into the tragic deaths has been transferred from Delhi Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation to maintain public trust.
This case continues to evoke serious scrutiny, raising questions about the safety standards in coaching centers across India and spotlighting the urgency for stringent regulatory measures.
