Unveiling Wonder: The Mystical 18-Handed Idol Igniting South Tripura’s Most Spectacular Diwali Celebration
In the serene village of Muhuripura, nestled within Santirbazar subdivision in Tripura, lies a remarkable relic of ancient India—a six-foot, one-ton, 18-handed rock-carved idol. Celebrated as a manifestation of “Shakti,” this idol forms the focal point of South Tripura’s most significant Diwali festivities, drawing thousands of devotees annually. Local lore tells of its discovery 70 years ago by ascetic Harananda Giri, who cherished it for years in his modest hut. It was his disciple, Radharani Bhairabi, who instituted the worship of the idol as Devi Raj Rajeshwari, elevating its status to a revered deity. Gradually, the community embraced the idol, establishing a temple that now hosts the region’s grandest Diwali celebrations.
Recalling the idol’s relocation, local social worker Dulal Gope shared, “We used bulldozers to transport the ancient stone to its new home—a spacious temple that now stages South Tripura’s most celebrated Diwali festival.” Experts suggest the idol originates from the 6th or 7th century, bearing resemblance to Buddhist sculptures at Pilak, a key archaeological site under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Despite its significant historical value, further examination is unlikely, as the idol is now a sanctified object of worship.
This year, the expansive two-day Diwali festival, beginning on October 30, will feature traditional rituals, a lively fair, and cultural performances. Government stalls will merge spirituality with community and administrative presence. Preparations are well underway, with an administrative meeting helmed by Santirbazar’s Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Manoj Kumar Saha and others, ensuring smooth event execution.
As Diwali approaches, Muhuripura buzzes with excitement, transforming into a spiritual epicenter with the idol at its core. For the villagers, Diwali is more than a festival—it’s a homage to their heritage, underscoring their connection to an ancient legacy while heralding their future.
