Injustice Sparks Outrage: Elderly Man Denied Mall Entry for Wearing Dhoti in Bengaluru
A group of farmers demonstrated in front of GT World Mall in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on Wednesday, protesting an incident where an elderly farmer in traditional attire was allegedly denied entry. The protest followed a viral video showing security personnel stopping an elderly man, who was wearing a dhoti and turban, and his son. The denial reportedly occurred on Tuesday.
The video depicted the elderly man outside the mall with his son, who narrated their ordeal and showed footage of the security guard barring their entry. Reports indicate the father and son had pre-booked movie tickets, but were told the man could only enter if he changed into pants. The elderly man explained he couldn’t change as they were traveling. However, the mall supervisor cited it as a strict policy.
Shehzad Poonawalla of the BJP condemned the incident, criticizing the Congress-led Karnataka government. “Farmers are being abused and insulted for wearing Dhoti? Banned entry in a mall! Karnataka CM wears a dhoti! Dhoti is our pride,” he stated on social media.
The incident occurred amid controversy over the Karnataka government’s decision to reserve private sector jobs for Kannadigas. The new bill, the Karnataka State Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries, Factories and Other Establishments Bill, 2024, mandates local hiring in private firms. Critics have labeled the move as ‘fascist’ and ‘short-sighted.’
On Monday, the state cabinet cleared the bill, which is set to be tabled in the Assembly on Thursday. This development, alongside the protest, has intensified the debate on local employment policies and respect for traditional attire in public spaces.
