Tragic Loss: Two Tawang Electrical Workers Fatally Electrocuted in Heartbreaking Accident
Two Tawang Electrical Workers Fatally Electrocuted in Repair Incident
In a tragic incident on Thursday, two staff members from the Tawang Electrical Division lost their lives due to electrocution while working on the 11kV Tawang-Timilo-Changprong-Seru-Yusum feeder line. The deceased have been identified as Tenzin Lotey and Vikash Kumar. Tawang Electrical Division’s Executive Engineer, Sange Phuntso, revealed that all three phases of the line had been restored up to a double-pole structure near Timilo earlier that morning.
The Executive Engineer explained that the line was initially shut down for isolation and then gradually recharged up to Timilo. A team was dispatched to identify the fault and restore the affected section. However, around 4:45 PM, while repairing an isolated conductor using an aluminum ladder, Lotey and Kumar were electrocuted as they had not taken the necessary shutdown from the control room. Fortunately, two other staff members, Wangchin and Tenzin, escaped unharmed.
Expressing deep regret, the Executive Engineer assured that the district power department is committed to preventing similar tragedies by enhancing safety awareness among its staff. Chief Minister Pema Khandu conveyed his condolences and announced that compensation will be provided to the victims’ families as per government norms. He also urged department leaders to reinforce safety protocols to avert future accidents.
This incident underscores the critical need for stringent adherence to safety procedures in electrical maintenance to protect workers from such devastating outcomes.
