Explosive Clashes Erupt Over Arrested Activists in Southern Iraq: A Nation’s Outcry
In Nasiriyah, Iraq, hundreds of protesters gathered on Friday demanding the release of activists detained during previous demonstrations, leading to confrontations with security forces. The city, a frequent hotspot for anti-government protests in Dhi Qar province, saw renewed activism five years after widespread anti-government demonstrations erupted in Iraq advocating for reforms. Protesters called not only for the release of activists involved in the October 2019 protests and more recent ones but also labeled the legal actions against them as “retaliatory.” Additionally, they demanded the resignation of the local police chief. Several Iraqi legislators, aligned with the protest movement, were present at the gathering.
Security forces attempted to disperse the protesters with smoke bombs and blocked access to Al-Haboubi Square using barbed wire. According to a Dhi Qar police official, who preferred anonymity, the clashes resulted in injuries to 11 security personnel and nine protesters. However, a police command statement reported injuries to 21 officers but did not mention injured protesters. In response to the day’s events, the provincial council convened an emergency session. Provincial council member Ahmed Al-Khafaji shared that the council decided to cease home raids on activists, allow them to address legal matters locally, and prohibit the use of live ammunition against demonstrators.
From October to December 2019, Iraq experienced its most significant protest movement since 2003, climaxing in the government’s downfall and instigating parliamentary adoption of a new electoral law. During that period, hundreds of protesters lost their lives and thousands experienced injuries as security forces employed live ammunition and snipers in a severe crackdown. Many were also detained during and after the protests.
