SHILLONG, Oct 16: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has underscored the potential of tourism as a pivotal driver of Meghalaya’s economy. Speaking via video link, he emphasized that leveraging the state’s rich natural beauty and resources through a skilled workforce could significantly boost its economic prospects. The Vice President inaugurated the foundation of the Meghalaya Skill and Innovation Hub, a project aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and enhancing youth skills.
Dhankhar urged the Meghalaya government to cultivate a tourist-friendly environment, suggesting that creating memorable experiences for visitors could transform them into ambassadors for the state. He highlighted the importance of systematic policies to unlock Meghalaya’s potential.
The upcoming Skill and Innovation Hub, set to be constructed on 6.54 acres in New Shillong with an investment of Rs 77.5 crore, will serve as a platform for youth incubation, training, collaboration, and industry partnerships. Dhankhar praised this initiative, stating it would significantly bolster the state’s entrepreneurial landscape. He also noted nationwide efforts to empower the youth, pointing out that Rs 60,000 crore has been allocated for skilling 5 lakh young people over the next five years.
Joining the Vice President in emphasizing the state’s strengths, Governor CH Vijayashankar and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma both highlighted Meghalaya’s youthful population as a vital asset. With approximately 85% of the state’s residents under 45, Sangma stressed the government’s commitment to harnessing this demographic advantage through various entrepreneurship programs. Initiatives like the CM Elevate and Student B-Plan Challenge with IIM Shillong exemplify such efforts.
Further commitment to fostering entrepreneurship was marked by the signing of an MoU with the UNDP. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and IIM Shillong Director DB Goyal, reinforcing the collaborative spirit to drive Meghalaya forward.
