Celebrating Heritage: The Emotional Triumph of Recognising Asomiya as a Classical Language
On October 3, 2024, the Union Cabinet officially recognized Assamese, also known as Asomiya, as a classical language, alongside Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali. This acknowledgment places Assamese in a prestigious category with Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia.

In the larger Brahmaputra valley, known historically as Pragjyotishpur and later as the Kamrup kingdom, Assamese evolved through significant cultural epochs, including the Mahabharat era.
Madhava Kandali, a pioneering Assamese poet, notably translated the Ramayana into Assamese in the 14th century, with later contributions from saints Madhavdeva and Sankardeva in the 16th century. This work reflects the language’s rich literary tradition.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for this historic decision, emphasizing its role in preserving Assamese culture. The Patriotic People’s Front Assam lauded the recognition, urging for Assamese to become more internet-savvy to ensure consistency and accuracy across digital platforms.
