Alarming Accusation: AITC Charges NPP with Model Code Violations in Meghalaya’s Gambegre By-Polls
The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has lodged a formal complaint against the National People’s Party (NPP) for allegedly breaching the Model Code of Conduct during the by-election campaign for the 56-Gambegre (ST) constituency in Meghalaya. According to a complaint submitted on October 16 by AITC District Coordinator SN Sangma, the NPP is accused of distributing CGI sheets to villagers in a bid to sway voter opinion, an action taken despite the Election Commission of India already announcing the election date.
The complaint was directed to the Returning Officer, pinpointing Aminda Simsang village (Polling Station No. 2) as a specific location where these activities are reportedly ongoing, in defiance of the Model Code of Conduct. Sangma claims this is a blatant misuse of government resources, characterizing the alleged distribution of materials as an act of bribery.
Furthermore, the complaint suggests that the NPP has strategically stockpiled significant quantities of CGI sheets at nearly every polling station, with distribution to locals continuing without restraint. These actions have raised serious concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the election process.
In response to these allegations, SN Sangma has called for immediate intervention to cease these activities. The AITC emphasizes the need to uphold electoral integrity and ensure a fair and unbiased electoral process, maintaining that such alleged unethical practices undermine democratic principles. The party hopes for prompt action to rectify the situation and preserve the fairness of the election.
