Breaking: Bengaluru Deluge Forces School Closures & Urgent Work-From-Home Advisory!
Continuous rain severely disrupted daily life in Bengaluru on Tuesday, leading to significant water-logging and traffic congestion in various parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru, signaling a heightened state of caution due to the increasing intensity of the rainfall. Consequently, schools have been ordered to close on Wednesday, and companies are encouraged to allow employees to work from home.
Bengaluru has faced relentless downpours since early Tuesday morning, causing widespread flooding and traffic snarls, particularly in Varthur, Hebbal, and Kadubeesanahalli. The disruptions extended to major tech hubs like Manyata Tech Park on Outer Ring Road and Sarjapur. A section of the Hebbal flyover towards KR Puram was temporarily closed due to water-logging before authorities from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) resolved the issue. Similar issues were also addressed on Allasandra Main Road near the BBMP swimming pool in the Yelahanka zone.
While schools and anganwadi centers shut down, colleges remain open with specific safety guidelines in place. Most schools have shifted to online classes for higher grades, while lower grade students have been given assignments to complete at home.
In response to the weather crisis, the BBMP established 24/7 control rooms across its eight zones and launched a helpline (1533) for residents to report rain-related issues. The heavy rain also led to trees being uprooted, temporarily closing roads, such as the Ashoka Pillar road blocked by a fallen tree. A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has been identified as the catalyst for the widespread rainfall. The IMD also issued a yellow alert for worsening weather in districts including Tumakuru, Mysuru, and several others in Karnataka, indicating potential disruptions to everyday activities.
