Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam is gearing up for the forthcoming bypolls for five vacant assembly seats. These seats were vacated after the respective MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent elections. BJP’s state leadership is confident in winning all the contested seats. As per the alliance arrangements, BJP will contest three seats, while allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) will contest one seat each. Specifically, BJP will field candidates in Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai, while AGP and UPPL will respectively contest in Bongaigaon and Sidli.
Behali became vacant after MLA Ranjit Dutta’s election to the Parliament, and Samaguri was vacated by Congress leader and current MP Rakibul Hussain. Dholai’s seat was left empty by current MP Parimal Suklabaidya. Meanwhile, AGP’s Phani Bhushan Choudhury and UPPL’s Jayanta Basumatary left the Bongaigaon and Sidli seats, respectively. On Sunday night, BJP convened a closed-door meeting to strategize and finalize their candidate list for the bypolls.
In other political developments, Home Minister Amit Shah held a strategy meeting for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly polls, emphasizing BJP’s plan to contest over 150 seats and addressing previous electoral losses. Additionally, Ajit Pawar of the NCP announced his candidacy for the Baramati assembly seat, driven by strong community support. Former Congress MLA Nirmala Gavit seeks to contest from Igatpuri on a Congress ticket amid potential changes due to cross-voting allegations against the current MLA.
