Heartfelt Tribute: Students and Professors Honor G.N. Saibaba’s Unyielding Courage and Inspiring Fight for Human Rights
At Jawaharlal Nehru University, a large gathering of students, professors, and activists paid tribute to Professor G.N. Saibaba, a renowned academic and advocate for Dalit, Adivasi, and disability rights, who passed away on Saturday. Professor Saibaba had spent over 3,500 days in prison before being acquitted and released earlier this year. The attendees honored his legacy with chants for the release of political prisoners and adorned the area with his quotes and photographs. Saibaba’s demise, following complications from gall bladder surgery, was attributed by his supporters to the years of harsh treatment he endured in prison, including severe health decline. Human rights activist Manoranjan Mohanty spoke about the physical toll imprisonment took on Saibaba, while Professor Apoorvanand remembered him as a sincere and calm scholar. Both highlighted the injustice he faced under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), calling for continued opposition to its oppressive use. Saibaba’s family, particularly his wife Vasantha Kumari and daughter Manjeera, were praised for their resilience and courage during his ordeal. As the community mourns, the call to uphold Saibaba’s legacy and fight against oppressive laws resonates strongly.
