Assam’s Bold Directive: Schools Embrace Religious Diversity Amidst Hindutva Leader’s Fiery Critique of Christian Missionaries

The Assam government recently issued an order mandating schools in the state to permit students to wear cultural and religious symbols, such as rakhis and tilaks, especially during festivals. This directive, announced by Deputy Secretary of the Department of School Education, Aditi Barman, on October 1, instructs schools to avoid practices that could lead to corporal punishment or discrimination. The order is in response to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights’ (NCPCR) advisory from August 8, 2024, which emphasized respecting students’ rights to express their cultural and religious identities.

Satya Ranjan Borah, a prominent Hindutva leader from Assam, has publicly supported this directive, criticizing Christian missionary schools for not valuing the Constitution’s duties. Borah pointed to Article 51A of the Indian Constitution, which promotes harmony and brotherhood among citizens, arguing that schools should adhere to these Constitutional tenets. He underscored the importance of teaching in mother tongues up to Class 8, as specified in the new Education Policy, to provide students with knowledge about India’s inclusive cultural heritage.

Borah, who plans to appeal for the enforceability of constitutional duties, argued that not allowing students to express their religious sentiments undermines child rights. He highlighted issues faced by Assamese students, particularly in missionary schools, where speaking their mother tongue can lead to punishment. He has urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address these concerns and has called for nationwide adherence to the state’s directive.

The Assam government’s directive aims to ensure that schools eliminate discriminatory practices and protect children’s rights, reinforcing the necessity for an educational environment that respects cultural identities.
