Breaking News: Centre Spurs Swift CBI Action on Alarming Assam Online Stock Trading Scam
The central government has tasked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with probing 41 cases of an online stock trading scam reported across various police stations in Assam. A notification from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, announced this development on Friday, October 11, and was shared on social media by the Assam Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
The decision, made in agreement with the Assam government, extends the CBI’s jurisdiction under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act throughout Assam. This moves to facilitate investigations into offences involving fraudulent trading and unregulated deposits, where substantial sums of money are involved.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration has pledged full cooperation with the CBI to ensure a prompt investigation. The scam surfaced in August 2024, when investors who had placed large sums in a company linked to the elusive Deepankar Barman discovered his office shuttered on August 21, and Barman untraceable.
In response to the growing number of related fraud cases, the Assam cabinet opted to hand over the investigation to the CBI. To date, authorities have arrested at least 65 individuals concerning the scam, including Assamese actor-choreographer Sumi Borah and her photographer husband, Tarkik Borah.
The scam’s revelation has involved significant public and police interest, prompting swift government action to mitigate the impact on duped investors and restore public trust in financial systems.
