In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about law and order, Baba Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and a member of the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP, was fatally shot in Mumbai’s Bandra. The incident occurred months before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, intensifying political tensions.
The attack took place at approximately 9:30 PM on Saturday near the office of Siddique’s son, Zeeshan, an MLA from Bandra East. Sources report that six bullets were fired, with four striking Mr. Siddique. One of his aides was also injured. Two suspects have been arrested, one from Uttar Pradesh and another from Haryana, while a third is still at large.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described the incident as "extremely unfortunate" and ordered stringent police action to prevent a resurgence of gang violence in Mumbai. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, has visited the hospital, where Siddique was taken. Shocked at the loss, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other political leaders have expressed condolences.
Mr. Siddique, a prominent political figure, was a three-time MLA from Bandra West and served as state minister between 2004 and 2008. Known for his political acumen and elaborate social gatherings, Siddique recently shifted allegiance from the Congress to the NCP earlier this year.
The incident has prompted opposition leaders to question the city’s security measures, especially given Siddique’s Y-level security. NCP President Sharad Pawar called for accountability, criticizing the government’s handling of law and order in the state.
