Niki Sumi Defends NSCN-K Amid Abduction Allegations

General (retired) Niki Sumi, President of NSCN-K (Niki), has rejected allegations of abduction and extortion against his group. This comes after the Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) and the Business Association of Nagas (BAN) demanded the arrest of NSCN-K (Niki) members accused of abducting two entrepreneurs from the Diphupar Ao Youth Forum on October 10. Authorities were given 48 hours from that evening to arrest the suspects.
Sumi clarified that the entrepreneurs were invited to discuss unpaid taxes owed by their employer, the owner of a water bottling company, rather than being abducted. The company owner reportedly refused to meet with the NSCN-K, opting to involve the police instead—a move Sumi saw as a challenge to the Naga political movement’s legitimacy.
He dismissed the demand to charge his group under Indian legal provisions, emphasizing that the NSCN/GPRN operates outside India’s constitutional framework. Sumi expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with youth groups if their demands were presented directly to NSCN/GPRN.
On the public call for "One government, one tax," Sumi urged for unification within the Naga society, fragmented by various factions like CNTC, ENPO, UNC, and NTC. He argued that taxation is crucial for sustaining the Naga political movement, accusing those opposing it of betraying Naga interests.
Sumi took a stance against accusations that NSCN-K is compromising the Naga movement by highlighting broader corruption in the state government, which he claimed receives less scrutiny. He emphasized his commitment to protecting the Naga identity and political rights, asserting that blaming the "underground" factions is unfair.
Regarding the demand to review the Ceasefire Ground Rules, Sumi stated that civil organizations are missing the core issue.
