Enchanting Bookscape: A Marvelous Durga Puja Pandal Inspiring Youth to Read
In Tezpur, a unique Durga Puja pandal designed as a library is captivating visitors at the Durga Bari Sarbajanin Durga Puja site in Bhairab Nagar Tila. This creative initiative aims to inspire the younger generation to engage with Assamese literature, especially after Assamese was recognized as a classical language. The pandal serves as a cultural beacon, highlighting the significance of reading in Assamese.
This special installation has been a standout attraction among more than 150 Durga Puja celebrations in the district. Community members from the region have united, contributing both finances and labor to bring this pandal to life. Over the years, the site has become renowned for its visually striking constructions using unconventional materials like mud, wood, bamboo, and recycled items such as sieves and bicycle rims.
Spearheading this year’s project is Tapas Das, an artist and organizer, who has skillfully transformed the pandal into a stunning world of books, featuring approximately 1,500 volumes from Assamese literary collections. This year’s design not only showcases a beautifully crafted pandal but also extends the theme to the pathway leading from the main road, which is decorated with books for nearly 200 meters.
This innovative celebration has successfully drawn attention, demonstrating a heartfelt endeavor to promote Assamese literature and culture during the revered Durga Puja festival.
