Karnataka’s Controversial Hubballi Riot Case Withdrawal: BJP Slams ‘Explosive’ Congress Move as ‘Blatant Muslim Appeasement’
Amit Malviya, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT cell head, sharply criticized the Congress party for retracting the Old Hubballi police station riot case, intensifying the political tension surrounding the event. The controversy revolves around a decision made by the Congress-led Karnataka government, under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, to drop legal proceedings against individuals involved in the 2022 Hubballi riots. Among these individuals were prominent figures from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), including Mohammed Arif, accused of orchestrating a significant communal mob.
The incident in question occurred in April 2022, when a large group reportedly led attacks on the Old Hubballi police station. The violence resulted in several police officers being injured due to stone-pelting and caused damage to police vehicles, a nearby Hanuman temple, and a hospital. The unrest was triggered by a social media post from a Hindu individual named Abhishek Hiremath, which allegedly offended Islamic sentiments.
Malviya accused the Congress party of indulging in appeasement politics, claiming the withdrawal happened despite opposition from the state’s Law and Police departments. He highlighted a letter from Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who had requested the dismissal of the case as early as October 2022, which eventually received approval from the home department.
In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Malviya condemned the Karnataka government’s decision, alleging it exposes the Congress’s tendency towards “naked politics of Muslim appeasement.” This development has drawn criticism as several police officers were seriously harmed in the riots, emphasizing the contentious nature of the withdrawal decision and its implications on law and order administration in Karnataka.
The move underscores ongoing debates over communal politics and legal accountability, raising questions about political motivations and governance amidst rising communal tensions.
