Delhi Awaits Urgent Action: Government Hesitation Clouds Deepavali Celebration with Firecracker Ban Uncertainty
In an effort to tackle Delhi’s notorious air pollution, the Aam Aadmi Party government announced a ban on firecrackers until January 1, 2025. However, nearly a month after the announcement, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has yet to issue an official order, resulting in firecrackers being sold freely as preparations for Dasara and Deepavali are underway. Government officials indicated that the ban’s implementation awaits final approval from the Lieutenant-Governor, but it is expected to be enforced soon. Despite pronouncements of strict enforcement led by Environment Minister Gopal Rai, past attempts have largely failed, with the populace continuing to use firecrackers with impunity.
Meanwhile, a 24-meter-high smog tower near Connaught Place remains non-operational, despite its construction in 2021 following a Supreme Court directive. Intended as an experimental measure costing ₹20 crore, the smog tower’s effectiveness has been questioned, leading the government to seek further guidance from the Supreme Court.
In addition to the firecracker ban, the government has outlined a comprehensive 21-point Winter Action Plan, which includes drone monitoring and other innovative solutions like artificial rain and a special task force to combat air pollution. Delhi aims to coordinate efforts with the central government and neighboring states to address various pollution sources, including vehicular emissions and stubble burning, aggravated by unfavorable weather conditions.
