Transformative VPP: Revolutionizing Disaster Management for Unmatched Safety and Resilience
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has urged the Meghalaya government to address critical gaps in disaster response mechanisms, citing inadequate communication and transport facilities as significant issues. This call to action follows a tragic deluge in Garo Hills, which claimed seventeen lives, including a father-son pair and a mother-daughter duo who perished in a landslide. VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh underscored the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience to prevent future loss of life.
While acknowledging the efforts of local authorities and disaster management teams who have been steadfast in their relief efforts, Myrboh expressed concern over delayed recovery efforts in certain areas where villages remain isolated due to damaged infrastructure and poor connectivity. He urged the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, led by the NPP, to reflect on and rectify these shortcomings to protect vulnerable citizens.
Myrboh further criticized the ongoing lack of communication and transport facilities in hard-hit districts like South Garo Hills, attributing these deficiencies to a historical lack of investment in sustainable infrastructure by successive governments. He emphasized the necessity for immediate enhancement of relief efforts to ensure that no affected family is left without support, especially in remote areas.
The VPP also called for comprehensive infrastructural upgrades in Garo Hills, advocating for improved road connectivity, the construction of bridges, and robust flood defense systems to avert future catastrophes. Additionally, they recommended a thorough review of disaster preparedness protocols, focusing on optimizing early warning systems and evacuation strategies.
Expressing solidarity with the Garo Hills community during this challenging time, the VPP vowed to continue advocating for their well-being, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns addressed. The party’s proactive stance highlights a crucial need for government action to safeguard Meghalaya’s citizens against the increasing threat of extreme weather events.
