Tragic Devastation in Meghalaya: Death Toll Climbs to 17 in Flood-Ravaged Garo Hills – CM Sangma Races to Support the Stricken Community
The death toll in Meghalaya’s flood-stricken Garo Hills has risen to 17, following the tragic deaths of two children due to flash floods. The victims, Silarin Marak, aged 8, and Tangme R Marak, aged 3, fell into a water-filled pit near their home in North Garo Hills’ Bate Apal-Bangsi Apal village. The pit had been rendered invisible by water accumulation, leading to the accident while the children were playing nearby.
In the aftermath of this devastating event, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is scheduled to visit the flood-affected areas, including Dalu and Atisia Songmong, on October 8. His itinerary includes meetings with the families of the deceased in West and South Garo Hills, as well as inspections of relief camps. Additionally, the Chief Minister will conduct a review meeting with local administrations to assess the scope of the damage inflicted upon life and property due to the ongoing crisis.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) remains actively engaged in the Garo Hills district, focusing on the distribution of relief supplies after the inundating flash floods and landslides have severely impacted the area. Heavy rainfall, which has persisted since October 4, continues to batter Meghalaya, particularly affecting the Garo Hills district and exacerbating the dire situation.
This ongoing bout of severe weather underscores the challenges faced by the local population and authorities as they strive to cope with the relentless rains and its consequences. Efforts are underway to provide relief and support to the affected communities amid the trying conditions. With the Chief Minister’s impending visit, there is a renewed hope for swift governmental action and aid, aiming to mitigate the impact of this natural calamity on the resilient residents of Garo Hills.
