Empowering Growth: Assam CM Inspires with 4 Million Soil Health Cards, Revolutionizing Agriculture!
On October 7, in a major initiative to boost Assam’s agricultural sector, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the distribution of Soil Health Cards (SHC) to over 400,000 farmers in Guwahati. The SHC project aims to distribute a total of one million cards, providing crucial soil fertility assessments to assist farmers in making well-informed crop production decisions. The initiative builds upon the Soil Health Programme inaugurated by the Prime Minister in 2015 to evaluate soil conditions. Acknowledging Assam’s efforts, the central government has extended support.
Chief Minister Sarma also announced substantial enhancements to Assam’s soil testing capacity, with plans to establish 26 new laboratories, increasing from the current five. These advancements will enable better tracking of soil health through easily accessible data, tailored for farmers’ local expertise.
Further supporting the agricultural sector, the Chief Minister inaugurated new agriculture education centres and unveiled plans for advanced farming machinery. A significant addition includes establishing 816 village-level agricultural machinery banks, expanding on the existing 80, to promote farming mechanisation. Notably, the central government recognises Assam’s contributions with a 95% financial aid, amounting to ₹9.5 lakh.
Moreover, the government will launch 96 agricultural knowledge centres and 93 agricultural development offices to enhance resources for farmers. As part of its comprehensive strategy for agricultural development, the Assam government aims to improve infrastructure and offer incentives for transporting paddy, ensuring holistic welfare for the state’s farming community.
