Shocking Love: Brother-Sister Tie the Knot in Hathras to Leverage CM’s Mass Marriage Scheme
In a startling incident from the Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh, a young man married his own sister, allegedly to exploit the state’s Chief Minister Mass Marriage Scheme. This shocking event has brought attention to the rampant misuse of a government initiative meant to aid economically disadvantaged couples by offering financial and material support.
Designed to facilitate the marriage of couples from poor backgrounds, the scheme provides household items and Rs 35,000 per couple. However, it has become a target for fraudsters looking to gain undue benefits. On March 5, during a mass marriage event in Lakshmipur block where 38 couples were wed, intermediaries reportedly convinced a woman, already married a year earlier, to participate again and access the scheme’s benefits. When her intended groom didn’t appear, the intermediaries shockingly persuaded her brother to step in, resulting in the siblings’ marriage under traditional rituals, initially unnoticed as fraudulent.
The situation unraveled once authorities were alerted. Amit Mishra, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Lakshmipur, sent Secretary Kaushalendra Kushwaha to the woman’s home to reclaim the awarded items and financial assistance. BDO Mishra confirmed that all benefits given to the fraudulent couple were seized once the truth emerged.
District Magistrate Anunay Jha has promised a comprehensive investigation, ensuring that all individuals involved, including intermediaries, face legal repercussions. The scandal has prompted broader concerns about the effectiveness and integrity of the mass marriage scheme, leading to calls for more stringent measures to prevent future misuse.
This bizarre incident highlights vulnerabilities in social welfare programs and puts pressure on authorities in Uttar Pradesh to enhance safeguards and ensure the integrity of these initiatives, thereby averting similar breaches in the future.
