Discover the Truth: Is It Safe to Visit the US? Unraveling the Impact of Guns and Trump’s Influence on Travel Enthusiasm
According to a recent survey by CNBC Travel and Milieu Insight, over 90% of travelers from Southeast Asia consider the prevalence of guns in the U.S. as a factor in their travel decisions. Conducted among 6,000 participants from six countries, the study identified Hawaii as perceived to be the safest U.S. state in terms of gun violence, while Texas ranked the least safe. Despite these concerns, 56% stated they are likely to visit the U.S. in the coming years, a figure that increases to 59% among those who have previously visited, even as 74% acknowledge rising gun violence concerns. Antarika Sen of Milieu Insight notes that previous visits, while raising awareness of safety issues, do not necessarily deter future trips. However, 80% of respondents indicated that gun prevalence would impact their attendance at large gatherings. The survey found Vietnamese, Indonesians, and Filipinos showed high concern about gun violence but also exhibited strong interest in visiting the U.S. Singaporean respondents, accustomed to low domestic crime rates, were among the least likely to visit. Furthermore, the U.S. presidential election could influence travel plans, with more than a quarter of respondents stating the outcome would affect their intention to visit. Concerns about race-based physical or verbal abuse in the U.S. are significant, with nearly three-quarters apprehensive about racial violence. This fear has reportedly escalated since the pandemic, partially fueled by information from social media, a primary resource for 61% of respondents. Despite no substantial evidence of migrant-related crime in the U.S., Trump’s rhetoric has influenced 27% of Southeast Asians to consider it a major travel deterrent. These insights highlight the complex factors shaping travel intentions from Southeast Asia to the United States.
