Chaos Erupts in Tripura: Urgent Prohibitory Orders in Kadamtala Following Explosive Communal Clash Over Durga Puja Donations
The Tripura government implemented a prohibitory order in North District’s Kadamtala region following clashes between two communities over the forceful collection of Durga Puja contributions. The order, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), came after information from North Tripura’s Superintendent of Police indicated a need to restrict public movement in the area.
Issued by Sajal Debnath, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Dharmanagar, the directive prohibits gatherings of five or more people, whether armed or not, and bans public meetings, rallies, and the use of loudspeakers. Restrictions also apply to vehicular movements in the jurisdiction from October 6 to October 9.
Tensions rose when a Muslim family, traveling for medical reasons, was halted by a Durga Puja organizer demanding a large donation, resulting in a confrontation. In response, members of the Muslim community protested outside a police station, leading to the arrest of one person based on their complaint. However, the situation deteriorated as miscreants attacked the local market, vandalizing and torching shops.
To restore order, the Central Armed Police Forces, Tripura State Rifles, and local police were deployed. Authorities resorted to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Some security personnel were also attacked during these efforts to control the escalating tensions.
The imposition of the prohibitory order aims to ensure peace and prevent further violence in the region while police continue to manage the situation and investigate the incidents.
