Assam Police Triumphs: Captures 108th Illegal Bangladeshi National, Boosting Security and Trust
Guwahati: Rising Influx of Bangladeshi Nationals in Assam
The Assam Police have recently apprehended multiple Bangladeshi nationals attempting to cross the India-Bangladesh international border illegally. The latest arrest occurred on a Sunday when police captured Md Nahid Hussain from Madiripur, Dhaka. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported that over 108 illegal Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested this year in the state.
In a related development, the Assam Police detained 12 Bangladeshi individuals in the Hatsingimari area of the South Salmara-Mankachar district on the night of October 1, 2024. These individuals were intercepted while trying to return to Bangladesh after a stay in various parts of India where they sought employment opportunities. They had entered the country through Meghalaya’s Dawki. Following their apprehension, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Assam Police facilitated their deportation to Bangladesh after completing all necessary legal procedures.
The rise in the entry of Bangladeshi nationals into Assam and other Northeastern states is alarming, primarily driven by political instability in Bangladesh. These individuals typically exploit porous borders in Assam and Tripura to gain entry into India.
Further investigations revealed that the primary motive for these illegal entries is to find jobs in major Indian cities. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) reported that between January and September 2024, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) captured 256 illegal immigrants, including Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, and 18 Indian agents through various operations in railway stations under its jurisdiction.
This ongoing situation raises significant concerns regarding border security and the socio-economic impact on the Northeastern region, necessitating effective measures to manage and control illegal immigration.
