Historic Haryana Elections: Over 60% Turnout Fuels BJP’s Hattrick Dream as Congress Eyes Triumphant Comeback After a Decade
As Haryana braces for a pivotal assembly election, key political players are making confident assertions and embodying spirited optimism. Congress leader and former Chief Minister Hooda, contesting from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, firmly stated, “BJP ja rahi hai, Congress aa rahi hai,” signifying the anticipated shift of power from the BJP to Congress.
In an unusual gesture, BJP MP Naveen Jindal cast his vote in Kurukshetra on horseback, citing auspicious traditions similar to weddings. Meanwhile, Rashika Gupta, a US-based software engineer, underscored the importance of civic duty by returning to Kaithal to cast her vote. Sunil Kumar, a groom from Kurukshetra, prioritized voting before his wedding, emphasizing its importance.
Congress candidate and Olympic wrestler Babita Phogat, running in the Julana constituency, encouraged voter participation, echoing the “day of change” theme. Fellow wrestler and Congress leader Bajrang Punia expressed confidence in a Congress victory, predicting 60 to 70 seats in the assembly.
Significant figures such as BJP’s Kuldeep Bishnoi and JJP’s Dushyant Chautala participated early in the voting process. AAP’s Anurag Dhanda, contesting in Kalayat, also exercised his franchise.
Senior Congress leader Kumari Selja in Hisar highlighted a desire for change among the electorate to bring Congress to power. Meanwhile, Abhay Chautala of the INLD-BSP alliance claimed neither Congress nor BJP would secure a majority, predicting his coalition’s success.
With over 2.03 crore eligible voters, Haryana has established 20,632 polling booths, including model booths and those managed by women, young staff, and differently-abled employees. The previous assembly election saw a turnout of around 68 percent, setting the stage for a potentially decisive electoral showdown.
