In a significant move to boost employment opportunities, Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), called upon the youth of Nagaland and the North East to consider careers in the port sector. During an interactive session at the JNPA Conference Hall on October 4, Wagh addressed visiting journalists from Nagaland, led by K Sonikumar Singh, Assistant Director of PIB Kohima, as part of an 8-day media tour in Mumbai.
The Prime Minister of India recently laid the foundation for Vadhvan Port, poised to be the largest in the country. Located in Palghar district, Maharashtra, it will be developed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), a joint venture of JNPA and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). Wagh highlighted that Vadhvan Port is expected to rank among the world’s top ten ports and generate immense job opportunities, projecting at least 1.2 million direct and over 10 million indirect employment possibilities.
Wagh underscored the potential for young people from the North East to be part of this burgeoning sector, which does not require high technical skills but offers good remuneration. "We are committed to the development of the North East and want its people to learn about this sector," he stated, offering support for skill training. JNPA is prepared to provide the necessary training to equip the workforce with the required skill set.
The upcoming port is anticipated to enhance India’s container capacity by adding 15 million TEUs by 2035, increasing to 23.9 million TEUs by 2040. The PIB Kohima Media tour aims to expose state media to various government initiatives in Mumbai, alongside social, economic, and cultural insights into Maharashtra.
By engaging the region’s talent, JNPA’s initiative underscores a strategic move towards inclusive national development, inviting Nagaland’s youth to seize these new opportunities.
