On State Disaster Risk Reduction Day, Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang emphasized the critical importance of preparedness and community awareness to combat natural disasters. Addressing the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that occurred a year ago, Tamang conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and those displaced. The disaster claimed numerous lives and left many without homes.
Tamang acknowledged the long-term benefits of disaster preparedness programs, despite their lack of immediate visible results. Recounting the widespread shock and acute distress following the tragedy, he extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their prompt support, with special appreciation for the Indian Army’s crucial assistance.
In response to the GLOF, the state collaborated with NGOs and political parties to deliver aid to the affected communities. Emphasizing lessons learned, Tamang urged residents to exercise caution when building homes, especially in high-risk areas, criticizing stubborn individuals who overlook safety warnings. Highlighting the government’s limitations, he stressed that while financial aid could be provided, lost lives are irreplaceable.
Tamang addressed issues of illegal settlements in Gangtok, urging community compliance with laws to prevent disasters. Events included expert-led discussions on disaster risk reduction, where officials were urged to educate the public about preparedness. Following the GLOF, various schemes were initiated, and recovery efforts were expedited with central government support.
Present efforts include the monitoring of 16 lakes to prevent future catastrophes. Tamang reiterated the need for public cooperation with government initiatives, underscoring that development thrives on communal support, not resistance. Additionally, he advocated for proper insurance coverage, advising citizens to secure property and vehicle insurance during the vulnerable monsoon season. The state’s proactive stance is deemed vital in safeguarding assets against natural calamities.
