Exciting Milestone: Assam Celebrates 39 New Sub-Districts in Phase 1 with More Transformative Changes Ahead in Phase 2
Guwahati, Oct. 4: Assam is set to undergo a significant administrative overhaul with the introduction of sub-districts, replacing the existing subdivision system. Announced by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, this change marks a new beginning in the state’s governance. From October 4, subdivisions will be renamed as sub-districts across 39 legislative assembly constituencies. In a phased approach, sub-district offices will also be introduced in 35 additional constituencies.
Chief Minister Sarma detailed the benefits on social media, highlighting how sub-districts will streamline public access to various administrative services. Residents will no longer need to travel to District Headquarters for matters like land issues, NOCs, MLA funds, excise matters, or ration card requests, as these will now be managed locally through sub-district offices.
The sub-district heads will be entrusted with powers and responsibilities akin to District Commissioners, further emphasizing the shift towards decentralized governance. This initiative aims to bring administration closer to the people, making it more accessible and efficient.
To mark the launch of this new system, the council of ministers and Dr. Sarma are set to inaugurate several sub-districts. On October 4 and 5, they will lay foundation stones in various locations across Assam. Notably, the sub-districts of New Guwahati and Dispur will be inaugurated on October 4, followed by Jalukbari on October 5. All are part of the Kamrup (Metro) district, with Dimoria sub-district inauguration slated for October 5 by Atul Bora.
This reform is slated to extend eventually to all 126 legislative assembly constituencies, ensuring widespread administrative accessibility and efficiency. The government’s move is a strategic effort to enhance local governance and foster closer interaction between administrative bodies and the public.
