Exciting Milestone: CM Triumphantly Inaugurates Yangthang Farms in Pelling, Transforming Agricultural Future
On Friday, October 4, 2024, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang officially opened Yangthang Farms in Pelling, Gyalshing, marking a significant addition to Sikkim’s heritage and tourism landscape. This newly developed, multi-faceted venture was initiated by the Thakarpa family, prominent figures in Sikkim’s socio-political domain. Owned by DN Thakarpa, a former Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, and R. Ongmu, a former Chief Administrator, along with Karma Thinlay Thakarpa, a social worker and government contractor, Yangthang Farms seamlessly integrates culture, history, and nature.
Key features of Yangthang Farms include the Orchidarium, museum, bird sanctuary, and the historic Yangthang Dzong. The Orchidarium showcases a rare collection of native orchids, highlighting the state’s rich biodiversity. Meanwhile, the museum preserves Sikkim’s cultural heritage by displaying valuable artefacts like traditional tools, clothing, art, and manuscripts.
Enhancing the visitor experience is the bird sanctuary, home to both exotic and indigenous species, promoting bird conservation efforts. The centerpiece of Yangthang Farms is the Yangthang Dzong, a palace over a century old, offering insights into traditional Sikkimese architecture and historical lifestyles.
